The EDM community fosters a sense of belonging and inclusiveness through a shared interests in music and art. Something I’ve fallen in love with through my experiences of going to shows is meeting hundreds of people amongst the loud booms, lyrics, and waves of electronic sound. The beauty I’ve found with meeting people is the overwhelming sense of happiness and peace you get from these shared interests with others within the crowds, whether for a brief smile or head nod, to exchanging information or dancing with them for hours on end.
One component that makes these shows so enjoyable for me is trading “Kandi,” or trinkets - little decorative objects, gadgets, or bracelets you give to one another as a sign of appreciation, respect, or joy you want to share with somebody. They’re thoughtful collectables, colorful accessories, or meaningless doohickeys with one overall purpose: make someone smile. I used my background of graphic design and print making to couple with my absolute love and admiration of EDM and its artists to make stickers to hand out to people I’ve interacted with. They’re meant to be silly, inquisitive, current and funny - all of which I hope to get someone to laugh and say “this is so thoughtful.” I do this with no expectation to receive anything back; to make someone’s night or memory for a short second, and to share a mutual love for music that brings us all together.
